History
From early 1971 tramping trips were
run about once a month from Aorere College with senior pupils, a teacher and
Frank Potbury, our founding President. When Aorere College became one of the
first community colleges in New Zealand, one of the night classes was for those
interested in starting a local tramping club; this was 1975 and trips by this
time were every Sunday, with weekend tramps going further afield. In April 1976
a general meeting was held, attended by 24 people. The name Toi Toi Trekkers
Tramping Club was chosen, on the basis that Papatoitoi was the early spelling
of Papatoetoe and we tramped through lots of toi toi, which had grown in
abundance in the area in the old days. The toi toi features on our Club badge.
Our first inquiry to join Auckland Associated Mountain Clubs was on 1st
September 1976. Toi Toi Trekkers became an Incorporated Society on 18th June
1979 and we became affiliated to Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand on
12th July 1979.
