Pouakai Range Loop
Mt Taranaki

Dec
ember 2009

North Egmont Visitors Centre
Is where I start
With a spring in my step
And a happy heart

The Razorback
A good place to stop
Quick bit to eat
And stunning views to the top

Continuing on to Boomerang Slip
No stopping here
Be careful not to trip

Holly Hut at the end of the day
With the Warden and one other, I stay
At 4.30 a.m. we’re all awake
Three runners, “and it’s dark”, for goodness sake!

Over the Ahukawakawa Swamp
And up the stair-cased track
Plodding on slowly
With a very sore back

Pouakai Hut is a welcome sight
Christmas Eve, 2009
A great place to spend the night

As evening draws on
The wind dropped down
Off to the tarn
For the best reflection in town

The lights of New Plymouth
Are twinkling below
With the stars in the sky
An incredible show

Off to the trig
In the morning we go
Mt Ruapehu in the distance
All covered in snow

A day at the hut
Is just what I need
To rest and relax
And have a good read

Back on the Kaiauai Track
Over the tops covered in tussock
Up to the lookout on Henry Peak
Blowing a gale, some shelter I seek!

Work on the bridge is not complete
It’s time to get wet feet
Over the Waiwhakaiho River I cross
Slippery boulders, covered in moss

Back at the carpark, an ice cream I eat
Four days of sunshine, the Circuit complete
Reflecting on what a great tramp it has been
Fulfilling yet another dream!
