Rangitoto Station Swan Song

November 2009

The first weekend of every month
We head to Rangitoto for good reason
To protect the Kokako against the rat
During the important breeding season

The farmer disallowed Noel’s trusty van
I had to come up with another plan
This being the very last trip for me
I hitched a ride with Pukekohe

Accommodation again the Woolshed
Brand new stairs have been installed
All comforts of home here too
Beds, Lounge Suite, a shower
And a large window with a view

Saturday dawned bright and sunny
What’s the plan, Rosemary today?
Load the pack with Bait, track markers,
Hammer, nails, tucker and I’m on my way

Yellow access and up Line 9
To WC track, in good time
Filling bait stations as I go
Making progress but rather slow

Several tree falls along the way
Putting markers up… tack, tack, tack
This is becoming a very long day
Got to finish no time to slack

I ponder who next will do this track
Seems strange to think I won’t be back
Many happy times, I won’t forget
With all the people I have meet

Farewell to all the volunteers
Valuable time and effort at no cost
A battle fort over many years
The Kokako’s song will not be lost!
