2012-01-29 Cascade Kauri Park Waitakere

Trip Report Sunday January 29 Waitakeres.

From Cascade Park down Whatatiri Track, along Long Road, Wainamu Bush Track, Smythe Ridge Track, Upper Kauri and Auckland walk back to cars.

A good day had by all being Nigel, Carl and Denise. Walking time about 4.5 hours with a few long steep bits, where conversation was at at minimum. A lovely stream crossing at the beginning of the walk with another bigger one later in the trip, with no wet feet. A lot of bird song to help us on our way which was very refreshing to hear them. We had many surfaces to walk along, gravel road, boardwalks and tracks so a bit of everything to keep it interesting, with good views of Rangitoto Island, and Auckland.

The boys did behave and it turned out to be a very special day for Carl. For those who have not heard the story of Carl saving a ladies life about 17 years ago, here is the short version. Back then both our club and North Shore Tramping Club were on seperate trips in the Waitakeres. One of the North Shore tramping club members (Dora) fell down a waterfall face and was floating face down in the river. Of all those present only Carl had seen the whole event, and he raised the alarm, and with members from both tramping clubs she was saved. Well today they both met on another Waitakere track under happier circumstances and it was just fantastic to see them together. Dora spent 3 months in traction in hospital and is an inspiration to us all - never give up.

Another perfect day out of the city with an ice cream at Green Bay to close the day. Thanks Guys for a good trip.
Writer Denise.
