Ruahine Ranges - January 2003

It was time to head off on our yearly jaunt into the Ruahine Ranges - this time we started walking at Kawhatau Base with the intention of heading up to the tops above McKinnon Hut to camp beside the tarn....   or so Steve, Steve and I thought!!  Our first task was to operate the cage across the river, so we could all get across with dry feet - no problem there -  then up the hill we went.  Unfortunately as we neared the tops the weather started to clag in and after having read the intentions of another tramping group in the area (who were headed to McKinnon Hut), we decided that our best chance of a dry bed for the night would be to head down to Crow Hut.  We arrived at the hut just before the worse of the rain passed through.

Day 2 - we awoke to a glorious day, and headed off across the swing bridge, along the river and "up" to McKinnon Hut.  Spending the afternoon, relaxing in the sun, enjoying the magnificent views across the tops and over to Mt Ngauruhoe.   The view from the long-drop isn't half bad either!!

Day 3 - the wind and rain were back with vengeance!!?   We were struggling to see the long-drop from the hut, and couldn't see much of the large tarn as we got "blown" by... the sooner we dropped down off the tops the better!  We enjoyed a far more pleasant walk below the bush-line, down the hill, across the river and out!  All things considered it was still a very enjoyable weekend in my favourite hills.
