Two vehicles travelled in convoy
to Whakatane. Colin, Barbara, Laurine & Claire in one
and Carl (scribe), Mark, Steve A and Steve G in the other.
Meeting at Mark's we enjoyed a hot drink and muffins made by
Mark's mum. Lunch was at Katikati and then onto the
Karibu Backpackers where our accommodation had been
pre-booked. A very nice place to stay and very
reasonably priced. Tea was at the local Fish & Chip
shop and then the call was made to us that a decision was to
be made at 8 a.m. on the Saturday morning, regarding whether
we would be going to White Island. Unfortunately, the
weather Gods did not smile on us on Saturday, it was not
suitable for our excursion to White Island. We had
lunch and headed to Ohope. A short walk was made by
some and then we returned to our accommodation where a nice
fire had been going all day - very cosy.
Sunday, the weather had improved and at 8 a.m. we received
the positive phone call that the trip would go ahead and we
all met at the White Island Tours office. We were met
the day before by Nigel who had left in the wee hours and
Max & Marlene also caught the boat, who had been staying at
Mt Maunganui. |

Our newest member in the club,
Jamie also met us, which made our compliment up to twelve.
An eighty minute boat ride to the Island and a very
informative guide showed us around the allotted area.
A very interesting place with sulphur, steam and lots of
history. A very pleasant day. Into our vehicles
we piled and off back to Auckland where we arrived at about
9 p.m. - A nice club effort. |
